In the social sciences, a social group is defined as two or more people who interact with one another, share similar characteristics, and collectively have a sense of unity. Regardless, social groups come in a myriad of sizes and varieties. For example, a society can be viewed as a large social group. The system of behaviors and psychological processes occurring within a social group or between social groups is known as group dynamics.

सामाजिक समूह ही संकल्पना पाहण्यापूर्वी समूह या संकल्पनेचा अर्थ जाणून घेणे आवष्यक आहे. समूह म्हणजे एकमेकांच्या सान्निध्यात असणे एकमेकांच्या निकट असणे. उदा. कपाटामध्ये लावून ठेवलेली पुस्तके, बांधकामासाठी रचून ठेवलेल्या विटा, हरणाचे कळप इ. हे सर्व समूह आहेत. हे घटक परस्परांच्या सान्निध्यात जरी असले तरी त्यांच्यात संबंध प्रस्थापित होत नाहीत. त्यांना परस्परांच्या अस्तित्वाची जाणीव नसते. एका बसमध्ये बसलेले सर्व प्रवासी देखील एका प्रकारचा समूह आहे. परंतु जेव्हा त्यांना परस्परांच्या अस्तित्वाची जाणीव होते तेव्हा सामाजिक समूह अस्तित्वात येतो.
